Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complex but favored poker variations. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure variation, has expanded in acceptance so quickly.
Omaha hi/lo starts just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A sequence of betting ensues where players can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. A further sequence of wagering ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, a further card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of betting follows at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers must attempt to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a few entrants often get confused. Contrasted to Hold’em, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to use exactly 3 cards on the board, and precisely two hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the identical concept in nearly all poker games.
The lower hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no low hand available, the higher hand wins the entire pot.
Although it seems complicated at the outset, following a few hands you will be able to pick up on the fundamental nuances of play simply enough. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an amazing array of betting choices and seeing that you have many players shooting for the high, as well as several battling for the low. If you love a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha/8.
