Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complex but popular poker variations. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure variation, has grown in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha/8 starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A round of betting follows in which gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. A further round of wagering happens. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, an additional card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of wagering follows and then the river card is flipped. The gamblers will need to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a number of entrants often get baffled. Unlike Texas Holdem, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player has to utilize exactly 3 cards from the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the very same concept in just about every poker game.
The lower hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no low hand available, the higher hand takes the whole pot.
It may seem complicated at the start, after a couple of hands you will be agile enough to get the basic nuances of the game easily enough. Since you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha Hi-Lo provides an exciting range of betting choices and owing to the fact that you have several players shooting for the high, along with several trying for the low. If you prefer a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to play Omaha hi low.
