Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complicated but favored poker games. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant variation, has expanded in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha 8 or better starts just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to every player. A round of betting ensues in which players can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. A further sequence of wagering happens. Once all the players have either called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of betting happens and then the river card is revealed. The entrants will have to put together the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where some players can get baffled. Unlike Holdem, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player has to utilize precisely 3 cards from the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same concept in almost all poker games.
The lower hand is more difficult, but really opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the high hand wins the whole pot.
While it seems complicated at the outset, following a couple of rounds you will be able to pick up on the fundamental nuances of play with ease. Since you have players wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better provides an exciting assortment of betting possibilities and seeing that you have several players shooting for the high, along with many shooting for the low hand.
