Omaha Hi Low: Basic Overview

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible variation, has grown in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha/8 begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of betting ensues where gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. A further round of betting ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of betting happens at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers will have to make the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where some players often get baffled. Contrasted to Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must use precisely three cards from the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the best hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the very same concept in almost all poker games.

The lower hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no lower hand available, the high hand takes the complete pot.

It may seem difficult at the outset, following a few rounds you will be agile enough to get the basic nuances of play simply enough. Seeing as you have players betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha/8 offers an amazing assortment of betting choices and because you have many individuals trying for the high, as well as several trying for the low. If you like a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha/8.
