Omaha Hi-Lo: General Overview

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complicated but popular poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible variation, has increased in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha/8 begins just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of wagering follows where gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are given out, this is known as the flop. A further sequence of betting ensues. Once all the players have in turn called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of wagering happens at which point the river card is revealed. The players will need to put together the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of entrants can get flustered. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to use precisely 3 cards on the board, and precisely two hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the best hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same approach in almost every poker game.

The lower hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the higher hand takes the whole pot.

It may seem complex at the outset, following a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the basic subtleties of play simply enough. Since you have players wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha Hi-Lo provides an exciting range of betting possibilities and because you have numerous individuals shooting for the high hand, and several trying for the low. If you prefer a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha/8.
