Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most difficult but favored poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure game, has grown in acceptance so amazingly.
Omaha/8 begins like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A sequence of betting ensues where gamblers can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. A further round of betting happens. Once all the players have either called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. a further round of betting follows and then the river card is revealed. The entrants will have to make the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a few players often get confused. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to use exactly three cards from the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. No more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the identical notion in nearly all poker games.
A lower hand is more difficult, but certainly free’s up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the higher hand wins the whole pot.
While it seems complicated at the start, following a couple of rounds you will be able to pick up on the basic nuances of the game with ease. Since you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha hi lo offers an overwhelming array of betting choices and because you have several players battling for the high, and many battling for the low hand. If you like a game with a lot of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
