Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most difficult but favored poker variations. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure variation, has increased in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha/8 begins just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A round of wagering follows in which gamblers can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. Another round of betting ensues. Once all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, an additional card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering happens at which point the river card is revealed. The players will need to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where a few players can get baffled. Unlike Holdem, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to use precisely three cards on the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. No more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the strongest hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical approach in nearly every poker game.
A low hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the high hand wins the whole pot.
It may seem complicated at first, after a couple of hands you will be agile enough to get the base nuances of play with ease. Since you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha/8 provides an amazing range of wagering choices and because you have several individuals shooting for the high, and several shooting for the low.
