Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most difficult but favored poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant variation, has increased in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha 8 or better begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A sequence of wagering follows in which gamblers can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is called the flop. A further sequence of wagering happens. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. Another round of betting ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The players will need to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where many entrants can get flustered. Unlike Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player must utilize exactly 3 cards from the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the strongest hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same approach in just about every poker game.
The lower hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no low hand presented, the high hand takes the whole pot.
It may seem complex at first, after a few hands you will be agile enough to get the base subtleties of play with ease. Since you have players betting for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha hi-low provides an exciting range of betting options and because you have numerous individuals battling for the high, and several shooting for the low.
