Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure variation, has increased in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha/8 starts like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A round of wagering follows where players can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of wagering ensues. After all the players have in turn called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering follows at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants will have to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a number of players can get confused. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player must utilize exactly 3 cards on the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same notion in just about every poker game.
The low hand is more difficult, but really free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no low hand presented, the higher hand takes the complete pot.
It may seem complex at first, after a few hands you will be agile enough to get the basic nuances of the game with ease.
